The EPA estimates that indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air, and Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors (EPA, 2024). That combination makes indoor air quality (IAQ) worth paying attention to, especially since your HVAC system is the primary thing circulating and filtering the air in your home.
But there's an important distinction that gets lost in marketing: your HVAC system is designed to control temperature and humidity. It can filter particulates if you use the right filter. It was not designed to be a comprehensive air purification system. Understanding what it can and can't do helps you make smarter decisions about IAQ without wasting money on products you don't need.

What's Actually in Your Indoor Air?
Indoor air pollutants fall into a few categories:
Particulate matter (PM): Dust, pet dander, pollen, mold spores, dust mites, skin cells, and fine particles from cooking. These are the pollutants your HVAC filter can catch. The smaller the particle, the harder it is to capture.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): Gases released from paint, cleaning products, adhesives, furniture, carpet, air fresheners, and building materials. Common VOCs include formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene. Your HVAC filter does nothing about these because they're gases, not particles.
Biological contaminants: Bacteria, viruses, and mold. Some of these are carried on particles (and can be filtered). Others are airborne in very small droplets or aerosols that pass through standard filters.
Combustion byproducts: Carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and particulates from gas stoves, fireplaces, and candles. These are gases and fine particles that standard filters don't fully capture.
Radon: A radioactive gas that seeps into homes from the ground. Has nothing to do with your HVAC system. Test for it separately with a $15 test kit from a hardware store.
What Your HVAC Filter Actually Does
Your HVAC system has an air filter. Every time the system cycles, air passes through that filter before moving across the evaporator coil. The filter catches particles. What it catches depends on the filter's MERV rating.
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates a filter's ability to capture particles of different sizes:

The sweet spot for residential HVAC is MERV 13. It captures 90%+ of particles in the 1 to 3 micron range and 85%+ of particles in the 0.3 to 1 micron range. That includes most bacteria, fine dust, and smoke particles. It also handles pollen and mold at 95%+.
Why not MERV 16 or higher? Higher-rated filters create more resistance to airflow. Your HVAC blower motor has to work harder to push air through a denser filter. On older systems or systems with undersized ductwork, a MERV 16 filter can restrict airflow enough to freeze the evaporator coil or damage the blower. Check your system's maximum MERV rating in the owner's manual or with your HVAC contractor before upgrading.
What Your HVAC System Can't Do (Without Upgrades)
It can't remove gases or VOCs. Standard filters (even MERV 16) only capture particles. VOCs are gas-phase molecules that pass right through. To address VOCs, you need activated carbon filtration or increased ventilation.
It can't kill pathogens. A filter captures some bacteria and viruses on particles, but it doesn't kill them. They can still grow on the filter surface. UV germicidal lights (discussed below) address this.
It can't bring in fresh air. Your HVAC system recirculates the same indoor air over and over. It doesn't introduce fresh outdoor air unless you have a fresh air intake, an ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator), or an HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator). Modern homes are built tighter than older ones, which improves energy efficiency but traps pollutants.
It doesn't run 24/7. Your system only filters air when the blower is running. Once the thermostat setpoint is reached, the system shuts off and the air sits. Some thermostats have a "circulate" or "fan on" mode that runs the blower periodically even when heating or cooling isn't needed, which improves filtration.
How to Improve Indoor Air Quality
The EPA recommends a three-part approach, in order of priority:
1. Source Control (Most Effective)
Remove or reduce the sources of pollution. This is more effective than any filter or air purifier.
2. Ventilation (Second Most Effective)
Bring in fresh outdoor air to dilute indoor pollutants.
Natural ventilation: Open windows when weather and outdoor air quality allow. This is free and effective but not practical year-round in most climates because you lose your heating or cooling.
Mechanical ventilation with an ERV or HRV: An Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) or Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) is a dedicated appliance that brings in fresh outdoor air and exhausts stale indoor air. It transfers heat (and in the case of ERVs, moisture) between the two airstreams, so you don't lose most of your heating or cooling energy.
An ERV costs $1,000 to $3,000 installed and is the best upgrade for IAQ in modern, tightly sealed homes. It works with your existing HVAC ductwork or can have its own dedicated ducts.
3. Air Cleaning (Third, Supplementary)
After source control and ventilation, air cleaning can further reduce pollutants.
Upgrade your HVAC filter to MERV 13. This is the single most cost-effective air cleaning upgrade. A MERV 13 filter costs $15 to $30 and needs replacement every 60 to 90 days. Confirm with your HVAC technician that your system can handle the increased resistance. Most systems built after 2010 can.
Whole-house media filters. A 4 to 5 inch media filter cabinet installed at the return air plenum provides MERV 13 to 16 filtration with lower pressure drop than a 1-inch filter of the same rating. These cost $300 to $600 installed and filters last 6 to 12 months.
UV germicidal irradiation (UVGI). UV-C lights installed in the air handler, near the evaporator coil, kill bacteria, viruses, and mold on surfaces and in the airstream. A coil-mounted UV light costs $400 to $800 installed. An in-duct UV system costs $800 to $1,500. UV lights are most effective against biological contaminants and also prevent mold growth on the evaporator coil, which improves system efficiency and reduces musty smells.
Portable air purifiers. HEPA air purifiers are effective for single rooms but don't address the whole house. A quality HEPA purifier costs $200 to $600 and covers 200 to 500 sq ft. They're good for bedrooms, home offices, or rooms where someone has allergies. They don't replace whole-house filtration.
Activated carbon filters. These absorb gases and VOCs, which particulate filters can't capture. Some portable air purifiers include a carbon filter stage. Whole-house carbon filtration systems exist but are less common in residential settings. Carbon filters need regular replacement because they saturate over time.
What Doesn't Work
Ozone generators. Marketed as air purifiers, ozone generators produce ozone gas that is itself a respiratory irritant. The EPA has consistently advised against them for occupied spaces (EPA, 2024). Don't buy one.
Ionizers without filters. Many cheap "air purifiers" use ionization to charge particles so they stick to surfaces. The particles end up on your walls, furniture, and floors instead of in a filter. They also produce small amounts of ozone. Skip these.
Essential oil diffusers for "air purification." They don't purify anything. They add VOCs to your air.
Duct cleaning as a regular maintenance item. The EPA says duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems, and studies don't demonstrate that duct cleaning reduces particle levels (EPA). Clean your ducts only if there's visible mold, vermin infestation, or excessive dust and debris. Routine duct cleaning every few years is a waste of money for most homes.
HVAC Settings That Affect Air Quality
A few simple settings on your thermostat and HVAC system can improve air quality:
Fan mode "Circulate." Some thermostats let the blower run for a set percentage of each hour (e.g., 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off) even when the system isn't heating or cooling. This keeps air moving through the filter more consistently. It uses slightly more electricity than "auto" mode but improves filtration.
Humidity control. In humid climates, set the cooling system to dehumidify to 50% or below. Most modern thermostats have a humidity setpoint. High humidity promotes mold growth, dust mites, and bacteria.
Regular maintenance. A clean system moves more air and filters more effectively. A dirty evaporator coil, clogged filter, or failing blower motor all reduce the volume of air being filtered.
